Business Spotlight: FIRC Is the Organization Holding Summit County Together

by Emily Lalwess

If you've lived in Summit County for any length of time, you've probably heard of FIRC. But if you're new here, or you've driven past the signs without really knowing what they do, this one's for you.

FIRC stands for the Family and Intercultural Resource Center. They've been in Summit County since 1993. They don't make a lot of noise. They just show up, every week, for thousands of people in this community.

What FIRC Does for Summit County

Their mission is straightforward: opening doors and unleashing the community's potential. In practice, that means a lot of different things.

Free Food Markets. FIRC runs weekly food markets in Breckenridge and Dillon. No ID required. No income verification. Anyone can walk in. In a county where groceries and living costs are genuinely high, this is not a small thing.

Community Health Navigation. Helping people find healthcare, connect with services, and navigate systems that can feel confusing or overwhelming. This is especially important for families who are new to the area or working through a language barrier.

Financial Empowerment. Workshops and one-on-one support to help people build financial stability. In a seasonal mountain economy, this matters more than people realize.

Family and Parenting Support. In-home programs, parent education, and early childhood resources for families with young kids. The kind of support that helps people actually put down roots here instead of burning out and leaving.

In 2024, FIRC served nearly 8,000 people and delivered over 32,000 services. Summit County has a total population of around 32,000. That number says everything.

The Summit Thrift and Treasure Store

Here's the part a lot of people don't know about even if they know FIRC.

FIRC runs the Summit Thrift and Treasure stores, and every dollar from sales goes back into their community programs. When you shop there, you're not just finding a deal on a ski jacket. You're funding the food markets, the health navigators, and the family programs.

They recently opened a new location at the Sol Center at 24 Rapid Drive in Breckenridge. More space, more inventory, more reach. They also accept clothing and gear donations year-round.

It's a genuinely good shop that does a lot of good beyond the shop.

Why This Matters If You're Buying Here

One thing I always tell buyers: Summit County is a real community. It's not just a resort. There are teachers, nurses, tradespeople, restaurant workers, and long-time locals who make this place what it is. FIRC is part of why that community holds together.

If you're moving here, knowing about FIRC is part of knowing where you live. Whether you donate, volunteer, shop the thrift store, or just tell someone else about it, it all counts.
