24 Hours in Dillon, Colorado: The Perfect Summer Day with Kids
Dillon might be the most underestimated town in all of Summit County. Tucked between Keystone and Silverthorne on the shores of one of Colorado's most stunning reservoirs, it doesn't have the name recognition of Breckenridge or the resort cachet of Keystone — and honestly, that's exactly what makes it special. It's relaxed, it's beautiful, it's genuinely family friendly, and on a bluebird summer day it might just be the best place in the county to spend 24 hours.
Here's how to do it right with kids in tow.
Morning: Hit the Lake Before Everyone Else Does
The secret to a perfect summer day at Lake Dillon is getting on the water early. Before the afternoon wind picks up and the reservoir gets busy, it's glassy and calm and the reflections of the Ten Mile Range and Gore Range on the surface are something you will not forget.
Head to the Dillon Marina first thing. They rent stand-up paddleboards, kayaks, pontoon boats, sailboats, and runabout motorboats — and the staff is genuinely helpful at matching you to the right watercraft for your family. If your kids are little, a pontoon boat is the move: everyone is comfortable, nobody is going overboard, and you can cruise the nearly 27 miles of shoreline at whatever pace you want. If your kids are a bit older and adventurous, paddleboards and kayaks are a blast and easy to pick up.
One option worth knowing about: Stand Up Paddle Colorado operates out of the marina and offers lessons and guided tours on the reservoir. If anyone in your crew is new to SUP, starting with a lesson makes the whole experience more fun.
After time on the water, make your way to Dillon's North Shore beach behind the amphitheater. It's sandy, it's surprisingly soft, and it's one of those spots that makes visitors stop and say "wait, we're in the middle of Colorado right now?" The kids can play on the beach while the adults take in the kind of view you'd pay a lot of money for anywhere else.
Mid-Morning: The Dillon Farmers Market
If you're visiting on a Friday between June and September, this is non-negotiable. The Dillon Farmers Market runs every Friday morning along the shores of the reservoir and it is one of the best farmers markets in the mountains — Colorado-grown produce, local cheeses, honey, handmade crafts, artisan goods, live music, and a kids' area with games and entertainment. There's also Yoga in the Park right as the market opens at 9am if any adults in the group want to start the day that way.
Grab something for a picnic lunch while you're there. The setting is unbeatable and you'll want to eat outside anyway.
Lunch: Dillon Dam Brewery
After a morning on the water, everyone is hungry and the Dillon Dam Brewery is the answer. This is one of the best family-friendly restaurants in Summit County — a two-story brewpub with a massive menu, award-winning craft beer for the adults, and a kids menu that actually has good options. The outdoor beer garden is open in summer and seats 60 people with mountain views. The bison burger is legendary. The nachos are enormous. The service is consistently great.
It's been a Summit County institution for over 20 years and it earns that reputation every single time. Don't skip it.
Afternoon: Explore the Reservoir Loop Trail
After lunch, walk it off on the Dillon Reservoir Loop — a paved recreational path that circles the reservoir and connects Dillon, Frisco, and Silverthorne. The full loop is about 18 miles but you absolutely do not have to do the whole thing. Even a mile or two along the waterfront with kids is stunning, and the path is completely flat and stroller-friendly in the sections closest to town.
If your family has bikes, this is one of the best easy rides in all of Colorado. The path runs right through Dillon and you can pedal to Frisco and back without breaking much of a sweat. Bike rentals are available at several spots in the area if you didn't bring your own.
For something a little different in the afternoon, stop by the 1883 Dillon Schoolhouse Museum for a quick look at the town's fascinating history. Dillon was actually relocated twice — the original townsite now sits under the reservoir, flooded when the Dillon Dam was completed in 1963. The museum tells that story and kids are surprisingly into it. From there, wander over to Marina Park right on the water — a great spot to let the little ones run around, throw rocks in the lake, and decompress before the evening's activities.
Evening: Free Concerts at the Dillon Amphitheater
Here is the best free thing you can do in Summit County all summer long and somehow not everyone knows about it. The Dillon Amphitheater hosts free outdoor concerts every Friday and Saturday night from June through early September, right on the shores of the reservoir. The lineup rotates through rock, jazz, folk, and orchestral acts — including national headliners — and the setting with the lake and mountains behind the stage is genuinely one of the most beautiful outdoor concert venues you'll find anywhere in Colorado.
On Sunday evenings in July and August, Movies on the Water screens classic films at the amphitheater after sunset. Bring a blanket, bring snacks, and let the kids stay up a little past bedtime. It's that kind of night.
For dinner before the show, Chimayo Mexican Grill is a local favorite for fish tacos, burritos, and frozen margaritas from the machine — reliably good, great for families, and affordable by Summit County standards. Or grab a pizza from Last Chance Pizza, which delivers and has been feeding Summit County families for years.
Before You Leave: A Note on What Makes Dillon Special
Dillon isn't trying to be anyone else. It doesn't have the main street bustle of Breckenridge or the resort infrastructure of Keystone. What it has is the lake, the trails, the farmers market, the amphitheater, and a community of people who genuinely love where they live. In summer it feels like the best-kept secret in the mountains — and 24 hours here with your family will remind you why people fall in love with Summit County and never quite manage to leave.
If spending a summer morning paddling Lake Dillon and a summer evening watching live music with the Rockies behind the stage sounds like your kind of life — it can be. We'd love to show you what it looks like to own a piece of it.
