Your Summit County Fall Bucket List for 2026
Before you make any plans, know this: fall is hitting early this year. Experts are predicting peak aspen color in the high country during the first two weeks of September, which is ahead of the typical late-September window most people plan around. Summit County in fall is crowded, the leaf peepers are real, and the window is short. Here's what to put on the list.
When to Go
High country above 10,000 feet peaks first, around September 1-14 this year. Breckenridge town and lower elevations follow a week or two behind. If you're flexible, aim for early September. If you're coming for Oktoberfest, you'll catch the town-level color right on time.
1. Hike Aspen Alley
GoBreck calls Aspen Alley one of the best fall hikes in Colorado and it earns it. It's a 2.6-mile out-and-back off Boreas Pass Road, and when the aspens are at peak gold, the photos don't even do it justice.
Get there early. Parking is gone by 9am on peak weekends.
2. Drive Boreas Pass Road
Boreas Pass Road tops out at 11,481 feet with views of the Ten Mile Range that you don't get from town. Drive it slow, pull over when you want, and bring a camera. Dogs are welcome, and a standard vehicle handles it fine in good weather.
Access it from the south end of Breckenridge.
3. Catch the Sunday Farmers Market Before It Closes
The Breckenridge Sunday Market at Main Street Station wraps up September 6 this year, right at the start of peak color. Sundays, 10am to 3pm, 70-plus vendors. Baked in Breck, Crafton's Summit Sourdough, Uncle John's Farm Stand, Peak State Coffee, local honey. Leashed dogs welcome.
The Thursday market at The Exchange Lot on Washington Ave runs through September 24, 4-7pm, if you want a second shot at it.
4. Eat and Drink at Breckenridge Distillery
Breckenridge Distillery is the world's highest distillery at 9,600 feet. Guided flights, tours, and specialty releases you can only get on site. The food is legit. Cocktails are better than most places in town.
Go after a hike. You'll have earned it.
5. Walk the Blue River Trail to Broken Compass
The Blue River Trail runs 1.3 miles through town and drops you right at Broken Compass Brewing. Dog-friendly, flat, easy. A perfect way to end a day.
Broken Compass is an award-winning local brewery with a dog-friendly patio and taproom. Get the Cocoa Stout. Order fries. Stay longer than you planned.
6. Go to Breckenridge Oktoberfest
Breckenridge Oktoberfest turns 30 in 2026. September 25-27, free to attend. Outer Range Brewing and Benediktiner Festbier are pouring, Polkanauts and Those Austrian Guys are playing, and there's an Oktoberfest 5K on Saturday morning at 10:30am.
It's right in the window for Breckenridge town-level color. Good timing.
