Whether you're planning your first ski trip to Keystone, returning for another unforgettable summer, or quietly wondering what it would feel like to own a piece of this mountain town โ you've landed in the right place.
Keystone, Colorado isn't just a resort. It's a real community nestled at 9,280 feet in the heart of Summit County, where locals and visitors share the same gondola, the same favorite coffee shop, and the same deep appreciation for what mountain living actually looks and feels like. At Own Your Summit, we know this community inside and out โ because we live here, work here, and help people find their home here every day.
This guide is your go-to resource for all things Keystone โ from the best places to eat and the most family-friendly winter activities, to how to get around without a car and what it's really like to own property here. Bookmark it, share it, and come back to it every season.
๐ฝ๏ธ Where to Eat in Keystone
Keystone's dining scene punches well above its weight for a mountain town its size. Whether you're looking for a post-ski burger and a cold beer or a white-tablecloth anniversary dinner, there's a table for you here.
Fine Dining
Keystone Ranch is the crown jewel of Keystone dining โ a AAA 4-Diamond, Wine Spectator award-winning restaurant set inside a stunning 1930s log home on the Keystone Ranch Golf Course. Chef-driven seasonal menus feature wild game, pristine seafood, and beautifully sourced Colorado ingredients. This is the kind of place you dress up for and linger over. Reservations strongly recommended.
Ski Tip Lodge has been feeding guests since the 1800s. Tucked into a historic log cabin, it offers intimate multi-course dinners with seasonal menus that change regularly. It's exactly the kind of meal that makes a mountain vacation feel special.
Alpenglow Stube earns the bragging rights as one of the highest-elevation restaurants in the United States, perched at the top of North Peak. Getting there is half the adventure โ you take a gondola and a surface lift to arrive. The views are every bit as good as the food.
Bighorn Bistro & Bar, located inside the Keystone Lodge & Spa, serves contemporary American cuisine with views of Keystone Lake. Open Thursday through Saturday evenings for dinner, with bar service daily โ and live music on Friday and Saturday nights during ski season.
Casual & Everyday Favorites
Snake River Saloon & Steakhouse has been a Keystone institution since 1974 and feels like it. The copper-topped center bar, stone fireplace, pool tables, and live music on weekends make this the kind of place you walk into once and come back every trip. The steaks are excellent. The grasshopper pie is legendary. Don't skip it.
Haywood Cafe is the local's breakfast spot โ a cheerful diner on Highway 6 with creative benedicts, country fried steak and eggs, and a famous bacon bloody mary. The line on a powder morning is worth it.
Kickapoo Tavern sits right at the base of the River Run gondola and earns its reputation as the go-to aprรจs-ski hangout. Burgers, BBQ, pasta, a sunny patio, and a lively crowd make it an easy favorite for families and groups.
Montezuma Roadhouse occupies a prime spot in River Run Village on the way to the gondola. Elevated American fare, a marble-topped bar, craft cocktails, and a warm, stylish atmosphere โ it works equally well for a casual lunch or a nice dinner out.
New Moon Cafe is the only independently owned restaurant in River Run Village and proud of it. Classic rock vibe, full bar with the largest local beer and wine selection in Keystone, board games, cozy couches, and a full menu from breakfast through aprรจs ski. It's the kind of place that becomes your regular spot within two days.
Edgewater Cafรฉ at the Keystone Lodge has one thing no one else can compete with: a lakeside patio and daily happy hour until 5 PM. Bring the family, bring the dog, and order a drink with a view.
9280 Sake House in River Run Village serves Asian-inspired ramen, rice bowls, and tuna poke bowls โ a warm, filling meal after a cold day on the mountain, with a great deck and TVs for catching the game.
Rotolo's Craft & Crust is your pizza answer in Keystone. Hand-tossed, casual, and consistently good โ exactly what you want after a full day of skiing or hiking.
ย
Nowhere Pizza & Pub sits right on Keystone Lake and is exactly what it sounds like โ a fun, relaxed pizza pub with a patio, foosball, pool, and darts. Open daily from 4 PM. Perfect for a casual evening out with the whole crew.
โ Coffee Shops
Steep Brewing & Coffee Company has two locations in Keystone โ one in River Run Village and one at Gateway Mountain on Highway 6 โ and both are worth knowing. They roast their own beans in-house, pour a nitro cold brew that's genuinely one of the best you'll find at altitude, and serve bagels, breakfast burritos, and pecan sticky buns. Oh, and they also brew great craft beer. Yes, really. It's a coffee shop and a brewery, and it absolutely works.
Inxpot is tucked into River Run Village near the base of the gondola and has been a beloved local coffeehouse for years. Open daily at 7 AM, serving breakfast and lunch. It's the kind of cozy, bookshelf-lined space that makes you want to linger over a latte before heading to the mountain. Note: they close during mud season (spring), which is typical for Keystone businesses.
๐บ Bars & Breweries
Steep Brewing & Coffee Company pulls double duty as Keystone's go-to craft brewery. Both Keystone locations have rotating taps alongside the coffee menu โ a rare and excellent combination.
GOAT Soup & Whiskey Tavern (yes, GOAT) is one of the only bars in Keystone open until 11 PM daily, making it a rare find in a resort town that tends to wind down early. Casual, local-feeling, and exactly the right vibe for a late nightcap on Highway 6.
Snake River Saloon โ already mentioned for food, but worth calling out again for the bar scene. Live music on weekends, a gorgeous copper-topped bar, a stone fireplace, and pool tables. This is the place.
New Moon Cafe in River Run Village carries the largest local beer and wine selection in Keystone, in a cozy space with board games and comfortable seating. Happy hour prices are among the best in the village.
Kickapoo Tavern at the base of the mountain is the classic aprรจs-ski choice โ loud, fun, cold beer, sunny patio. You know what you're getting and it delivers every time.
โณ Golf Courses
Keystone's two championship courses make it a legitimate summer golf destination, not just a ski town that happens to have fairways.
Keystone Ranch Golf Course is an 18-hole, par-72 course designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. that winds through Lodge-pole pines and around a small lake in the peaceful Keystone Ranch area. Yardage ranges from 5,582 to 7,090. The course is home to the Keystone Ranch Restaurant, so you can fuel up before your round or celebrate a good one after. A fully stocked golf shop is on site.
Keystone River Course is an 18-hole, par-71 course set along the curves of the Snake River in West Keystone, with dramatic elevation changes, water features, and stunning views of Lake Dillon. Yardage ranges from 4,762 to 6,886 โ five sets of tees make it accessible for players at every level. The River Course Grill and clubhouse are on site.
At 9,000+ feet of elevation, expect your drives to fly about 10โ15% farther than at sea level. It's one of the best perks of mountain golf.
๐ฟ Ski & Snowboard Rentals
Getting the right gear makes all the difference. Here's who to know:
Keystone Sports (resort-owned) has two on-mountain locations โ River Run Village and Mountain House Lodge โ with rentals, demos, tuning, waxing, and apparel. Convenient if you're already at the base.
Christy Sports also has two Keystone locations (River Run and Mountain House), with a reputation for expert boot fitting and a wide range of rental and demo options for all ages and skill levels.
Breeze Ski Rentals is located at 23110 US Hwy 6 #134, just outside the main village and a short walk to the lifts. Booking online in advance saves up to 25% โ worth doing before your trip.
Black Tie Ski Rentals and Ski Butlers both offer something the in-store shops can't: delivery directly to your door. Their technicians come to your accommodation, fit your gear right in your room, and you head straight to the mountain the next morning without standing in a single line. For families especially, this is a game-changer.
Epic Mountain Rentals carries high-performance gear and offers season-long rental options โ worth knowing if you're visiting multiple times or considering a longer stay.
๐ Getting Around Keystone
One of the great things about Keystone is that you genuinely don't need your car once you're here.
Keystone Resort Free Shuttle runs color-coded routes connecting all three villages โ River Run, Mountain House, and Lakeside Village โ and all base areas. In winter, shuttles run on a regular schedule and pick up approximately every 20 minutes, with ride times of 10โ15 minutes. In summer, the resort runs an on-call service from 7 AM to 6 PM (call 970-496-4200). It's free and easy.
Summit Stage is Summit County's free regional bus system, connecting Keystone to Breckenridge, Frisco, Dillon, and Silverthorne. The newer X Flyer route connects Frisco and Breckenridge directly to Keystone every other hour, seven days a week. If you want to explore neighboring towns for a day โ which we highly recommend โ this is a painless way to do it.
Airport Shuttles from Denver International Airport (DEN): Keystone is about 90 miles from DEN, roughly 90 minutes to 2.5 hours depending on traffic and season. Three reliable shuttle services make the trip easy:
- Epic Mountain Express โ hourly departures in winter, shared and private options
- Peak 1 Express โ door-to-door shared shuttles with multiple daily departures
- Summit Express โ daily scheduled and private charter service, 24/7, year-round
Parking: River Run's lot is free and sits right off Highway 6. On weekends, arrive before 9 AM โ it fills up fast. Mountain House has both a free east lot and a paid west lot.
Pro tip: Because the gondola departs directly from River Run Village, and everything you need is within walking distance, many guests park once on arrival day and don't touch their car again until they leave. That's a pretty great way to vacation.
๐จโ๐ฉโ๐งโ๐ฆ Kid-Friendly Activities
Keystone is consistently ranked one of the best family ski resorts in Colorado โ and the off-slope activities are a big reason why.
โ๏ธ Winter
Skiing & Snowboarding: Kids as young as 3 can take group lessons, with half- and full-day programs available. Kids 12 and under ski free when you book two or more nights of lodging directly through the resort. No blackout dates. Keystone is also the only resort in Summit County with night skiing, open until 8 PM on weekends and holidays.
Snow Tubing at Adventure Point: Eight lanes of high-speed snow tubing atop Dercum Mountain, accessed by gondola. Sessions are one hour, $33/person. Kids must be 42 inches or taller. Reservations required (970-496-4386). A gentler Family Tubing Hill is available at the Keystone Nordic Center for younger kids.
The World's Largest Mountaintop Snow Fort: Yes, it's real โ and yes, it's as fun as it sounds. Every winter Keystone builds a massive snow fort at the top of the mountain, complete with castle walls, towers, climbing nets, and snow slides. Non-skiers can ride the gondola up just to experience it.
Ice Skating: Keystone Lake is home to North America's largest Zamboni-maintained outdoor skating rink โ all five acres of it. There's a second, smaller rink at Dercum Square in River Run Village. Special events like Glowbug Mondays (skating with glow sticks after dark) make it extra memorable.
Horse-Drawn Sleigh Rides: One of those Keystone experiences that feels straight out of a holiday movie. Depart from the Keystone Adventure Center at Lakeside Village and choose between a 20-minute dinner ride to a ranch homestead (with hot chocolate, beef barley stew, and biscuits) or a scenic 60-minute ride through Soda Creek Valley. Both are wonderful.
Kidtopia โ Free Daily Programming: Running daily from mid-December through mid-April, Kidtopia is Keystone's free children's event program. Daily cookie time, village parades, fireworks, arts and crafts, movie matinees, milkshake socials, meet-the-rescue-dogs events, and more. It's genuinely impressive how much is packed in, and how much of it is free.
Scenic Gondola Rides: Ride the River Run Gondola to 11,640 feet for panoramic views of Lake Dillon and the Continental Divide. No ski ticket needed โ great for non-skiers or rest days.
Nordic Skiing & Snowshoeing: The Keystone Nordic Center offers 10 miles of groomed trails for cross-country skiing, skate skiing, and snowshoeing. A beautiful way to experience the backcountry without the lifts.
๐ Summer
Mountaintop Snow Tubing (Year-Round!): One of Keystone's most surprising claims: snow tubing operates in summer too. Ride the gondola up and tube down the same hill used in winter โ Colorado's only summer snow tubing on real snow.
Scenic Gondola Rides: The gondola runs Thursdays through Mondays in summer, carrying you to 11,640 feet for views that stop people in their tracks. Easy, accessible, and absolutely worth it for every member of the family.
Keystone Bike Park: Over 30 lift-served singletrack trails with 2,000 feet of vertical drop. From beginner-friendly flow trails to serious expert descents โ accessed by gondola. Bike rentals available nearby at Norski Sports, steps from the River Run gondola.
Keystone Lake & Adventure Center: In summer, Keystone Lake transforms into the activity hub of Lakeside Village. Rent paddle boats, kayaks, canoes, and stand-up paddleboards at the Keystone Adventure Center. Walk the lakeside path, fish, feed the ducks, or just sit on the small beach and soak up the mountain air.
Hiking: Take the gondola up Dercum Mountain and hike the 2.3-mile Dercum Summit Trail for stunning ridgeline views. A flatter, paved trail along the Snake River is stroller-friendly and great for younger kids.
Horseback Riding & Wagon Rides: Keystone Stables offers guided horseback rides and horse-drawn wagon tours through the Soda Creek Valley, sharing the history of the area's earliest settlers. A lovely way to slow down.
Kidtopia Summer Programming: Summer Kidtopia in River Run Village includes pottery painting, toys and costumes, bouncy houses, bungee trampolines, and rock climbing near the gondola plaza. Summer Kidzfest events have featured pony rides, trackless train rides, balloon artists, and bubble foam pits.
Mini Golf: River Run Village has a mini golf course โ a low-key, fun way to wind down a big adventure day.
Summer Festivals: Keystone's summer festival calendar is genuinely great. Stars & Guitars (July 4th weekend) brings live music, free face painting, and circus performers to River Run Village. The Keystone Wine & Jazz Festival runs in mid-July. The Bacon & Bourbon Festival kicks off the season. Most festivals have free general admission.
