Can You Work Remotely from Breckenridge? Here's the Honest Answer
Can You Work Remotely from Breckenridge? Here's the Honest Answer
The question comes up a lot. Someone is looking at a condo in Keystone or a house in Breck and they ask me: can I actually work from here? Like, full-time, real job, Zoom calls and deadlines and all of it?
The honest answer is yes. But there are a few things worth knowing before you assume it works exactly like your setup at home.
The Internet Situation
In town, internet is solid. Breckenridge has cable internet through Xfinity and fiber through Allo. Most properties in town get reliable speeds. If you're doing video calls all day, you'll be fine in the vast majority of condos and homes within Breckenridge proper.
Where it gets trickier is the more remote properties. Cabins and homes outside of town limits sometimes have slower or less consistent service. If working remotely is non-negotiable for you, it needs to be on your due diligence list. Before you go under contract on anything, ask about the actual internet provider and speed. Not the listing description. The actual provider.
Starlink has been a game changer for more remote properties. If a place you love doesn't have great wired internet, Starlink is worth looking into.
Cell service in Summit County is generally decent on Verizon and AT&T in town, though it can get spotty on mountain roads and in some valleys. Worth knowing if you're someone who takes calls on the go.
Where to Work
If you need a change of scenery, Gravity Haus in Breckenridge has coworking space that's worth checking out. It's a solid option if you want a dedicated work environment outside of your home without commuting anywhere far.
Beyond that, Breckenridge has coffee shops with wifi where a lot of remote workers set up for a few hours. You're not in a city with a dozen coworking options, so manage expectations there. But for focused work with a good coffee, you'll find your spot.
The Lifestyle Part
Here's what nobody tells you before they move to a mountain town to work remotely: you'll probably be more productive, not less.
Hear me out. The commute is gone. The city noise is gone. The decision fatigue of "where should we go tonight" is simplified by the fact that you're surrounded by mountains and the options are ski, hike, bike, or stay in. People who move here tend to get focused during work hours because they actually want to get outside when they're done.
Mountain Time also works well if you're working with teams on either coast. You're two hours behind New York and one hour behind Chicago. You can be online early enough for East Coast mornings and still wrap up at a reasonable hour.
What to Watch for When You're Buying
If remote work is part of your plan, here's what I'd flag as you look at properties:
Internet provider and speed. Ask specifically. Don't rely on "high speed internet" in the listing description.
Layout. A dedicated workspace makes a real difference. Summit County has a lot of condos where the living room is also the dining room is also the office. If you need a door to close for calls, look for a property with a separate bedroom or loft that actually functions as an office.
Upload speeds matter more than people think. Video calls eat upload bandwidth. Make sure the connection can handle it, not just streaming.
The Real Talk
Breckenridge is a small mountain town. It's not going to have everything a city has. If your remote work life requires a WeWork with 24-hour access and a dozen coffee shop options within walking distance, this isn't that.
But if what you need is a solid internet connection, a quiet environment, and a reason to step away from your desk that involves skis or a mountain bike instead of a highway? This place delivers.
I've watched a lot of buyers make the jump in the last few years. The ones who are honest with themselves about what they need and do their homework on the property itself almost always make it work.
If you're thinking about it and want to talk through what to look for in a property, reach out. I'm happy to help you think it through.
